Comic Strip Prepositions

Explain to children that a preposition tells the position of something or someone in a sentence.  Have students identify the word "position" in preposition.  This is a helpful hint for them all year.

To practice using prepositions have each child take a block and a cup.  Then play a game where the leader gives a prepositional word card and the child acts it out with their cup and block.  For example, “the block is on the cup”, or show the word card “on”.  As an extension, have children act out the phrase using themselves and their desks.

Franklin Is Lost - is a terrific book that is jam packed of useful prepositions

Before reading children are invited to notice the many prepositions and are challenged to see how many they can identify.

After reading we compiled a list of the prepositions found in the book.  Students are then encouraged to think of all the places Franklin could be, for example; the tree, the mountain, the rock, etc…

This information is recorded on a chart for easy access.

Children make a cartoon strip story of Franklin’s adventures.  As a early grade one project children can use sentence starter strips “I am...” Children are encouraged to expand on the sentence as their abilities allow.

For fancy publishing you can create a filmstrip book using a letter sized piece of stiff manila paper. Then use strips of paper about 50cm wide, with small boxes drawn on, big enough for students to draw their illustrations in.  Using an exacto knife cut two slits into the paper 50cm wide and  long enough to have the picture show between the two slits.  Feed the paper through the two slits.  Then on other strips of paper have students write their sentences to go with each picture.  Staple these strips to the lower half of the manila and students are ready to present their comic book stories!
