After reading many Franklin books the children noticed that the first page of each book tells the many things that Franklin can do. For example “Franklin can tie his shoes and count by 2’s.” We collected a variety of Franklin books and made a list of all the activities that Franklin could do. If copyright permits, photocopy the first page of the Franklin books and have the children highlight Franklin’s accomplishments with a highlighter – a student’s favourite. This is a valuable first step in reading for specific information for young children. In a turtle shaped book, children write sentences using the frame “Franklin can” and illustrate the pages.
