Franklin Projects

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Kindergarten

Our Franklin project started with a sharing of who Franklin was and who his friends were.  What we knew about Franklin and his friends.  Of course the children knew quite a bit about Franklin due to the weekly show that they watch.  We then shared stories about Franklin and read some of the Franklin books.  We discussed the fact that the characters were animals.  We choose three of the animals to research.  We choose owl,  badger and goose.  We also decided that we would write some Franklin stories.  We wrote two stories and you can read them here on this website.

One of the activities we experienced is a traveling museum from Hinton, Evergreen Museum. The museum curator pictured above has collected road kill and had them preserved or has been given animals that were hunted and stuffed but the owners were going to discard them. The children were treated to a close up few of many animals including owls and badgers. Later one of the students in the class brought in a stuffed goose that his uncle owned. Seeing the animals up close helped the children understand what they were finding out about these animals' appearances.

Websites

We discovered many wonderful websites about our animals as we did our research.  Below is a list of websites on the three animals we researched.  Check them out.

Owls

http://www.owlpages.com  This website proved to be the best in its in depth treatment of owls and the type of information that could be found.  The children could even listen to owl calls on this site.  Very exciting.

Goose

http://www.magma.ca/~elliehh/1CGtitlepage.htm  This website follows Canada Geese from their arrival in the early spring to their departure in the fall.

Badger

http://www.livingdesert.org/sgamericanbadger.html  This site was mostly text.  This prevented the kindergarten children from being able to use this site as well as they were able to use the previous two sites.

Owl Alphabet Book.htm

We wrote an alphabet book of Owl facts.  The children and I chose one word for each of the letters and then  wrote a sentence fact that related to that word.  The children were then assigned pages to illustrate at home.  The book then was bound together and is a favourite in our classroom library. Click on the title and see pages from our owl book.

Badger Book.htm

The badger proved to be the most difficult to find information about since badgers are only in a small portion of Eastern Canada.  Since information was limited we decided we would write a book entitled "Ten Things I know about Badgers"  Together we wrote out ten things we learned about badgers and then we illustrated the pages.  Again this book was placed in our classroom library and is also a favourite to pick up and look at. Click on the title and see our badger book.

Franklin Stories

One of the last projects we did was to write Franklin style stories.  The children enjoyed discussing the situations that Franklin found himself in and possible situations we could write about.  They finally chose two topics they themselves were personally familiar with.  Their topics were:  Franklin gets hurt and Franklin is sorry.  These are topics that the children were personally familiar with and so a discussion was held on times they got hurt and times they felt sorry for something they had done.  Finally, after long discussions it was decided that a lot of these things happened to them at a playground.  So the setting for both stories naturally fell in a playground.

We hope you enjoy the two Franklin stories we have written.  Please click on one of the two titles to reach that story.
