Mole Research

Before we started our mole research I wanted to find out what the children knew about moles first.  The children right away identified that there was a mole character in Franklin stories.  I have a list of their background knowledge and predictions:

  • they live in the ground

  • they have long claws

  • they dig

  • they make holes (mole, hole, that rhymes)

  • sometimes they make big long bumps in your garden

  • sometimes they go out of their holes

  • I think they eat snakes

  • A mole digs really good with its feet

  • A mole could dig for 5 or 6 hours

  • A mole has really strong feet

  • His tail looks like a rat's tail

  • If a mole is awake he digs fast and then when he gets tired he has a nap inside his tunnel

  • A mole is really strong

  • a mole is furry

  • It can dig for a couple of hours

After the children told me what they knew or what they thought, we read through some information.  These are the facts that the children thought were important to include in our research.

  • A mole's feet are like shovels

  • It is brown

  • You can't see its eyes or ears but it has a pointy nose

  • It lives is a tunnel or burrow or underground

  • It shares it's home with other moles, babies and pocket gophers

  • Moles have between 2 and 5 babies and their babies are born without hair

  • Moles can not see

  • A mole eats earthworms, beetles, spiders and grubs

This research was done by the children in Mrs. Bezubiak's class at St. Monica School
